Trace doesn't recognize the name "athetos" until he regains the missing year of memories part-way through the game; He was just a normal physicist doing normal physicist things up until the accident.

When he regains his missing memories, he then recalls that the pressure valve was UNRELATED to the experiment, and the explosion was just an unfortunate accident. Further, AFTER the accident, trapped in a wheelchair with no sight, he comes up with his radical theories that get him famous amongst the media, and in turn hated by physicists, who nickname him Athetos.
