I'm pretty darn sure that references to "patternminds" in-game are another way of saying "scientist". We know trace is a scientist.
This got me thinking...
In the Anonymous Quote it says:
"And so the arms of the apocalypse were sealed, the masters of patterns castrated"
That would mean that any scientists around that time were prevented from breeding and likely exiled/shunned as well, accounting for the loss of literacy. Some of the games notes make it sound as though a group or caste of scientists were responsible for the war that ruined Sudra. The reference in the Proverb note to the "black-headed" could be another reference to scientists.
