I think the reason the Variants attack Trace is because they are ''"forever seeing danger in every shadow"'' ([[Journal Page (Note)#Journal Page (Uruku)|Journal Page (Note) (Uruku)]]) They also attack other Athetos clones, as seen in [[Transcription (Note)]]. They suffer from some sort of multiple personality disorder, and ''"Demon, Athetos Say, Kill"'', is simply the variant self conveying orders from the Athetos self.
