I think the reason the Variants attack Trace is because they are "forever seeing danger in every shadow" (Journal Page (Note) (Uruku)) They also attack other Athetos clones, as seen in Transcription (Note). They suffer from some sort of multiple personality disorder, and "Demon, Athetos Say, Kill", is simply the variant self conveying orders from the Athetos self.
