I got the vibe that a Pattern Mind is someone who is born with a brain connected to the higher reaches of the multiverse or perhaps achieved "enlightenment" like athetos did, thus touching on the core of existence and gaining the ability to bend reality with enough studying and research.

I imagine it this way due to athetos crossing the breach and then some hundreds of years later being able to cause this games events to happen. He saw that civilization and was able to use his powers to replicate many things thus creating the modified clones and the axiom disruptor among other things such as the red coat.

He is able to use science on a higher level to force reality to bend to his whim but obviously there is a limit.

Essentially they seem like demigods of some sort and I still havent decided if Athetos hid a rebirth chamber in earth or if he took over one of the Traces that existed or what in the true end.

Though it seems to hint the pattern mind power causes a dependency on reasearching further and reaching greater heights of science due to Trace being so obsessed with getting back to Sudra and Athetos himself commiting genocide for the sake of obtaining greater scientific breakthroughs regardless of his initial noble intentions. 

Though we won't be able to tell for sure unless we get an idea on what happened in the time between Prime Trace first entering Sudra and when he returned as Athetos from beyond the 'Filter' 

Not to mention the possibility of this being a loop. Prime Trace discovers Sudra after an epiphany and manages to enter cross the Breach which could suggest he already had the Axiom Disruptor at this point. He continues into the Filter and changes his name to Athetos who does his genocide thing then is slowly trying to prevent his death to his own pathogen. A pathogen that the Rusalki have created a cure for, but not just any Rusalki no, Ophelia the outsider/schemer who suggests that Trace survives the pathogen because he is a Pattern Mind and more subtly because of the nanogates ripped out of Katrahaska which leads to perhaps she was once from the other side of the Breach like Athetos. 

Which finally leads to Trace going 'home' and in this case seems to support that Sudra is not simply a gateway between worlds and universes but time itself since none had passed since the explosion in the lab. Then Athetos through planting his own mind or maybe just his desire in either Trace during the battle or even the nanogates themselves since prior evidence suggests they would still be in him for two reasons. 1. So the Rusalki can control Trace if he ever becomes the second Athetos and 2. Because the nanogates seems to be able to hold critical parts to sustain his continued existence and the Rusalki give the odd feeling that they could use his power.

Athetos then ensures  Trace returns to Sudra like the notes suggest he vanishes and perhaps goes to Earth then back to Sudra and becomes another Athetos in a different Sudra. I mean that sure sounds reality bending right? But I could literally go on all day about theories I love this game afterall.

Long story short Trace and Athetos are clearly connected in a deeper plot that is too hidden from us right now and the only way to get answers is from the dev or a sequel.
