A part of the discussion:
Trace: "What is this contraption you're in? Are you okay?"
Athetos: "It protects me from the pathogen."
Athetos: "I previously used a much more portable device ... but the rusalki destroyed it."
Athetos: "This ungainly machine merely prolongs my demise."
I think that "merely prolonging his demise", despite protecting him from the pathogen, indicates that he had indeed found a way to push back death by old age prior to this.
