I think that's a "2" - you can press L3 or R3 (push the Analog joysticks in) while vieweing the map to add a waypoint/reminder of the room you're in - a "1" or "2" respectively.  This way if there's a room you wish to return to once you have the required upgrade you can find it agian easily.
