I agree that she isn't dead, she is just mute. The idea of a dream world created for her seems to be speculation, but is a possibility since Veruska clearly cares for her and would want to ease her pain. In this case, such a dream world might be like medication, not making her wholly unaware of her surroundings, but at least stabalizing her condition.
